Grade: 1st

Welcome! I would like to tell you a little about myself. I graduated from Jacksonville State University in December 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. I graduated from Southside High School in 1991 and started first grade at Southside Elementary the year it was built. I have been married to my husband, Tim Williams, for 20 years. I have two beautiful daughters, Mollie and Macie. Mollie is a sophomore at Auburn University, (War Eagle!) and Macie is a sophomore at Southside High School.  I also have three dogs, Millie-Grace, Lucie Mae, and Bucky!  Plus I have a granddog named Creed:)

When I was a little girl, I wanted to grow up and become a teacher. After many years of going around in circles, God led me into the teaching field. I cannot imagine having a more fulfilling career than making a difference in the lives of precious children. As a teacher, I want to equip children with the knowledge, discipline, and responsibility needed to be a successful adult.

I believe that education is the most important aspect of a child's life. Each child is a unique person with his or her own style of learning. As a teacher, I focus on the different learning styles of each child, adjusting to meet his or her individual need in the classroom. It is my responsibility to teach each child. No child should be left out of the learning process. I will be a positive role model, establishing a learning environment that encourages self-concept and self-worth.

Before learning can begin, I will establish discipline and effective classroom management. I will implement assertive discipline in my classroom. Once rules and expectations are established, teaching can begin.  I use hands-on teaching activities that emphasize student involvement in the learning process. I am not a teacher that stands in front of the classroom all day talking! Students need to be involved, not sitting and listening all of the time. I want children to be excited about learning!

I encourage all of my parents to be involved. Parents play such an important role in the motivation of a child to learn. By reviewing at home, children are able to recall information more effectively. Community also plays an important role in the learning process. Having volunteers come and read is a great way to get people involved in education. This also helps the students relate to different types ofpeople in the community.

Student learning should be the chief priority of the school.  Each school should acknowledge that each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs. Students' learning needs should be the primary focus of all decisions impacting the work of the school. Schools need to provide students with a variety of learning activities to accommodate differences learning styles. Students' self-esteem should be enhanced by positive relationships and mutual respect among and between students and staff. The commitment to continuous improvement is imperative if schools are going to enable students to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners.

Students also play an important role in the school environment. Students are expected to act in an orderly manner andbe respectful to others. Being prepared each day for instruction keeps students and teachers on task. It is the students' role to help keep the school clean and attractive. While in the classroom, students should be attentive and ready to learn. No conduct that interferes or disrupts an atmosphere conducive to learning should be permitted.

Each year I will look forward to the challenge of meeting each individual need in my classroom.  I will work every day to be the most effective teacher for my students and myself.  My goal as a teacher is to make a difference in each child's life that I have the privelege of teaching.  Children are our future.  Without education, children do not have a future.  I will be a positive influence encouraging each child in the development of his or her unique self.  I will make a difference in the life of a child.
